TCDs3 vs. CT emissions, Round 1

Post by Jeremy »

Overall: Fail

Gas Cap Leak Test: Fail
Visual Inspection, Catalyst: Fail

HC limit (PPM): 147
Me: 142

CO% limit: .47
Me: 2.09

NOx limit (PPM): 1029
Me: 382

Once I get the laptop talking to the ECU, I can lean it out a bit and get it to pass, I have little doubt. My concern is the part about the visual inspection. When I took the 87 in, that spot said "N/A". I guess they only look for it if you fail. :? I'm going to take it back uncatalyzed for my free re-test, see if they fail me for that again.

Gas cap is a bit different than the one on the 87, so a simple swap should pass that. Updates as they become available.

The catalyst is fine... just not in the vicinity of your car :D

Nice. I'm not even being sarcastic. Thats a lot cheaper than a cat.

I seriously doubt you will pass without a catalytic converter...

Its been done. With a killer tune and perhaps some denatured alcohol, it is possible.

The twin turbo 6er passed MA inspection without a cat, running the Motronic. MA emission standards are the same as CA.

....yeah, but they have a visual out here, and the 'snails' don't exactly look stock.

We're talking about gaseous emissions, not light emissions.

"Congratulations, sir, your car emits nothing but purified air. Our records show that the manufacturer of the emission controls hasn't paid the State Sponsored Extortion Fee... you FAIL your inspection." Brilliant!

Finally getting the knack for this Megasquirt stuff. Megatune/Megalogviewer is a really killer combo, I have to say. I have some revised maps to play with this weekend and then I'll take another crack at it sometime next week probably. After I get permanent plates.

Turns out the car was running 13-13.5:1 at test speeds. No way it's going to pass anything without a cat at those AFRs. :D

I really like the tuning console in MegaLogViewer. Where it traces that little yellow line across your VE table, and lets you adjust the values in the table through MegaLogViewer. Thats cool stuff.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but what do you think are my chances of passing catless in MA with good running car on stock chip and 180K on the clock? Should I look into cats for inspection time use? Would lower octane number than 89 give me more chances?

Thanks.

The fuels octane rating doesnt matter here. I think running the car on gasoline and alcohol would do the trick. If its running well and everything is in good shape, you might be able to swing it.
