Hello, on the advice of Bill (with the recently destroyed driveshaft) I've come over here from the bigcoupe forum hoping to gain some of your collective knowledge.

I've spent countless hours searching the archives and this seems like a pretty tight knit community so please excuse any ignorance on my part ahead of time.

I've emailed Todd with some general questions regarding the set-up but I also have some questions that I feel could be better answered by the community.

Background: The car is an '89 635csi (B35 w/9:1 CR). Its a 265 5 speed with a 3.91 differential. Only engine modifications are extrude honed intake, bored throttle body and adjustable FPR.

I'd like to install a Stage 2 set-up. My goal is 300 rwhp. This car sees about 2K miles/year

I've lined up a shop thats familiar with TCD to do the install. They're former employees of Ireland Engineering. They've quoted me around $800. Does that sound reasonable?

I'm in the budgeting stage right now, so I'd like to ask the collective group: What would you reccomend in addition to the standard S-2 equipment?

Boost Controller? Exhaust?MSD?Headstuds?Ceramic Coating?Clutch?

I'd like to order everything from Todd at once, so I'd like to know what everyone thinks are worthy investments in addition the standard S2 set-up.

Get the exhaust, headstuds, MLS headgasket, and UUC clutch setup from Todd...Also spring for the ceramic coating too. Well worth it...

My thinking as of now was to run the stock head gasket (with about 8-10psi) until it blows. When it does blow I'd do a full re-con on the head. I'd like to keep the stock clutch in there until its gone as well. Is this wishful thinking?

Also, judging from pictures, the exhaust doesnt seem to have a resonator? How loud (at all RPM) is the TCD exhaust?

And, what does the ceramic coating achieve?

The ceramic coating helps keep all that heat inside of the exhaust manifold where it belongs, instead of radiating outward to everything under the hood. The TCD exhaust is not what you would call "quiet", but with the turbo muffling most of it, it is quite bearable. FWIW, the stock gasket probably will not last long unless it is fresh, and you'll be pissed when you have to remove and reinstall everything again in short order to swap that gasket...

Yes. Do it now and save yourself the headache. Even at moderate boost levels you'll slip the stock clutch in the higher gears. The headgasket can wait, as long as you know it's likely to not last too long at higher power levels.

Very reasonable. Much quieter than a stock m30 with Supersprint or B&B exhausts. The turbo really quiets things down. The catalytic converter acts as a sort of resonator to help keep things quiet as well.
And, what does the ceramic coating achieve?
Better flow by keeping the exhaust gases hot in the exhaust piping, and also helps keep underhood temperatures a bit lower.

My personal recommendation for anyone putting a turbo on an e28 is to poly fill the differential mount. There's enough torque there to pull the center section straight through.

Welcome to the fun. What's your timetable for getting this together and on the road?

Thanks guys you've been a great help. My car's are in California, but I'm a college student in Maryland. So that gives me limited access to when I can work on them.

I'd like to have everything ordered by November and then have everything installed in December.

I think I'm going to pick a used B35 head and have Ireland En. rebuild it for with matching ports an what not...but I hope I can get a little bit of fun out of the stoch HG.

BTW is $800 reasonable for the install?

That's very cheap. I wouldn't even consider doing a S2 for that amount.

I guess I'll be thankful for the install price.


One more thing, My final drive ratio in first gear about 15:1

Will I be getting too much wheel spin? I'm running 235/45 17 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s

3.91 rear diff will be ridiculously short. A nice stock 3.25 would work much better for a low boost application.

I had traction issues on a hard shift to fourth last night on the Mass Pike while playing with a sport bike. That's at 12psi, 235 width tires, and a 2.93lsd.

It was also about 50 deg F ambient. :haul: That poor bike just couldn't figure out why he couldn't get away from me. :rofl:

Man...tire spin in fourth gear with a 2.93!!! Thats pretty crazy.

I was thinking along the lines of a 3.73 or a 3.64, but I guess I should reconsider.

BTW I used to run a 4.10 and THAT was ridiculously short.
