center-bearing

Post by Russianblue »

in the midst of my turbo install, i am wondering if this 1 year old center bearing needs to be replaced. appears to have some 'cracks'. I don't know why the new cb would be cracked in the first place (i did have a busted diff mount), but I'm wondering if this is just a PITA R&R waiting to happen with the new and improved HP and TQ??

any thoughts?

If the rubber is cracked I would replace it. Theres no reason not to, unless your budget is tapped out. The turbo wont put additional stress on the center bearing, but if its in crappy shape it would have needed replacement anyway.

Thanks dan.

I haven't seen it myself, but can certainly see the cracks in it. But the rubber in general is new. ( 1 year old). They want 2 hours of labor ($140) to replace it because that's what "the book" says. Do you think that book quote is for the whole job, including removing the exhaust and everything else? They've got my Bentley at the shop and I don't have a lot of time this morning to research the process of simply replacing the CB while the Driveshaft is already off the car.

If the DS is off, as far as I know you just mark the driveshaft so you can put it back together with the same orientation, then you pull it apart in the middle and swap out the bearing. I dont think it would take 20 minutes. If they want 140 for that you might just pass on that and do it yourself when you get a chance.

From my experience with the CB the rubber has some kind of coating on it which "cracks" and peels off.

When they are new they do have a wax-like coating on the outside like you said but if his is pretty old i'm sure that coating hs gone by now
