Just found out what was wrong with my engine.
Just found out what was wrong with my engine.
The blocks deck was not flat! This caused the combustion gassed to leak around the head gasket into the coolant passages. TT had to have .008 taken off of the block for it to be true and seal. I had checked it myself with a straight edge but apparently missed it. I can excuse myself due to lack of experience, I can not excuse a "professional" engine builder missing that. Yet another finding of engine work I paid for and was not done due to negligence or pure stupidity.
So along with the worst head preparation in the world, the block was not flat. Even though the block was rebored, I guess checking the deck was too hard for that shop. THAT is why two head gaskets failed, not my tuning.
I am glad I paid $8000+ for that engine rebuild...
I am not really surprised but at least I have closure.

Duke, do you think this is mainly attributed to where the block was sourced from & it's history? From my research & questions asked, I do recall its origin. On a second note, what is your current stance on the minimal RA #'s of what a head should be prepped to given this new finding?
thanks for the info!
For those of us that have kept up with the archives both previous & current this is definitely something we all can benefit from unfortunately.

I thought the Blue devil was up and running? Man I hope you get it right soon...
All of the info I past on the RA required is completely sound and the industry standard. Talking with Paul B. he would have prepared the block deck in the same manner as the head, a RA below 20 and level of course. He also told me that measuring the block deck with a straight edge is not easy and made me feel better about not finding the problem myself. A competent shop would have.Nebraska_e28 wrote:Duke, do you think this is mainly attributed to where the block was sourced from & it's history? Where I sourced the block is not the issue now, the fact that a engine builder in Germany and the shop that TCD used both did not check the deck surface is very disturbing.

The car was sold months ago to TT in Arizona. He is the one getting the engine fixed properly at last.
Yea, I paid over $8000 for someone to do this and it was not done.Duke the deck on my L block is flat but you still want too clean these things up because they will have a certain amount of pitting and such. I had about .005 taken off its nice and clean and flat!
Cometic, the manufacturer of the MLS gasket that we sell, recommends a RA of 50 or better.
Our engine builder did have instructions to check the block. He confirmed that it was fine.
We dyno tuned the car and delivered it in perfect running order. The customer was more than happy. What happened afterwards was out of my control.
The invoice for the engine work from our builder was $2500. I can post the invoice if necessary.

Thats nice Todd, the head I received from your shop has an RA between 90 -130 which Paul B confirmed with a $4K profileometer. I still have the head in the same crap condition from your shop too. Don't even try to say that when you measured it was different. You had no experience with the tool you borrowed and did not even go over the complete head surface. I can have other experts measure it to confirm Paul's findings.T_C_D wrote:Cometic, the manufacturer of the MLS gasket that we sell, recommends a RA of 50 or better.

Your engine builder is a POS , thief and a shiester. I would not believe him or you on anything in this matter. You still using him?
Yea, a head gasket failure 800 miles later and then 500 miles after that. Nice work you boys do man! What happened afterwards was out of my control.
It is in your best interest to not respond to posts on this matter. Just makes you look really bad.
We have a "Duke" rule now. We do not sub out any engine work. In fact we rarely do any work in the shop for customer's at all. You proved that no amount of profit is worth the risk of one bad customer.Duke wrote:You engine builder is a POS and a shiester, I would not believe him or you on anything in this matter. I am 100% confident that our products work as advertised and have never had any customer other that you unhappy about anything! Ever!
Despite your best efforts we are still here. I promise you that TCD will still be operating after you have blown up your first Tiger or crash it or whatever castrophic end that car will see.

I agree,Wiseguy wrote:Duke,

IMO you should have taken this off of the board long ago.
It never should have come to this board. TCD should have honored his work and fixed the car.
I guess you would have been cool with spending over $8K and getting what I got...a crap engine and personal attacks.
I am about done with it. Todd just can't keep his mouth shut.
I am happy to hear that I was the first and last to be taken by your ignorance on engine building.T_C_D wrote: We have a "Duke" rule now. We do not sub out any engine work. In fact we rarely do any work in the shop for customer's at all.
I too have a "Todd" rule. Never have any work completed without a warranty and written contract. Looks like we are all winners.

I can give a crap what it cost. The $2500 of BAD engine machining cost me over $8000 because the engine was so damaged it needed rebuilding again. This was all done by you in your shop. Guess how much the O-ring on the Challenger shuttle cost that ended up destroying it and killing all seven of the astronauts...less than $100.T_C_D wrote:$2500 for engine work Duke. Refund the $2500 then, it will make you feel better. I can use it for my Tiger engine.
Wow, Paul Burke charged you $8000 for the rebuilt b35 cyl head? I know I provided the MLS free of charge.Duke wrote: I can give a crap what it cost. Maybe you should direct your anger at him.
No jack-ass, that is what you charged me. Put the glue down.T_C_D wrote: Wow, Paul Burke charged you $8000 for the rebuilt b35 cyl head? I know I provided the MLS free of charge.

TT is now paying for another engine rebuild. The one that you should have done correctly the first time.
In fact, Paul has yet to charge me a penny for the B35 he provided. He is good people, unlike others I know.

You never sent me the invoice that you have created in the past few months.T_C_D wrote: I guess I need to post the invoice since you have no idea what you were charged.
What, you think that posting a invoice for $2500 worth of crap engine work is gonna make you look good and me bad somehow?
You are such a bad business man and a moron. Post your substandard engine work invoice away. It will make no difference. Make sure that the guy who did the work can easily be identified too. I sure want to know who it was.

That was so predictable.
The point is that you continue to say that you paid $8000 when it was $2500. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to post. I'll post both the machine shop invoice and yours so that anyone who is still interested canin fact see that we made nothing off this nightmare.
Go drink some wine and calm down. I just continue to LOL at the insanity you call your memory.
Dude, wow...you are really thick. Read this slowly now...T_C_D wrote: The point is that you continue to say that you paid $8000 when it was $2500. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to post. I paid you over $8K to R&R my engine and have it rebuilt. The machine work that YOU subcontracted cost $2500 and was crap. That made the $8K I paid you a waste because the engine needed another rebuild when you got it back to me.
So what if you made nothing, I lost $8K+. Once again, you are really looking bad.
I hold you responsible for the TOTAL amount of $8K+, not the machine work alone.
Am I the only one who sees it this way?

I disagree. The more you post the better I look. The more time that passes since you gave up just reinforces that what we do works. More kits are sold, more cars hit the road, more people are happy.Duke wrote: Again, you are really looking bad.

Go back to bragging about what a great investor you are.
Or solo piloting.
Or halloween decorating.
Or unicycling.
Or, did I forget something?
You just make me laugh now.

If somebody would stop posting topics about it, it would be done. But somebody really feels the need to bring it up. I dont know why. Wait, I'm confused . . .
First, your German engine builder who you bragged was so cheap put this motor together for you.
Then you blew a headgasket (2, actually, if I remember correctly, the first one crumbled due to age).
Then you blew another headgasket.
You said Todd sold you a bad headgasket and Cometec made crap.
Then you blew a headgasket.
You said Todd's machine shop surfaced the head incorrectly, thus causing the headgasket to fail, and Cometec didn't know what they were talking about when they specified operating parameters for their headgaskets.
You said Todd's machine shop didn't check for cracks as they were supposed to and you "paid for".
Now you say Todd's machine shop didn't deck the block like they were supposed to and you "paid for".
Honestly, I feel your pain. Having crap go wrong is never fun. HOWEVER, why is that Todd is getting all the blame here? Sure, you may have spent $8k putting this motor to it's current point, but that wasn't all spent on Todd. Where's your indignation at the German builder who built a block with oval bores? Or the other machinist (who, again, I remember you bragging about the low cost of) who didn't rebuild your Hartge head properly?
To lay fault entirely on Todd's shoulders is ludicrous and laughable. Yes, it didn't come out correctly, but there's plenty of blame to go around on this one. If the machine work was $2.5K, where's the other $5.5k come in? The cost of the s2 kit? To my knowledge, you haven't had to replace a SINGLE COMPONENT of that kit. So yea, I'd say you are the only one, or one of a very small community, that sees it that way.

My original 2 cents worth has been deleted. Friendships mean more to me than arguments.

Duke, whether or not Todd's work cost you 8k, saying you paid 8k for a "crap rebuild by TCD" is saying you paid 8k and they did awful work. It seems(its been confirmed by both you and Todd) that you did not pay him anywhere near that amount, and that his work was not the problem. If you're so caught on the matter, call out Todd's machinist, but don't slander his buisness because after all, even you wouldn't admit there's a better turbo kit out there. You're twisting the story that should have been done long ago. And what exactly was the point of posting this last thread? It wasn't to inform the consumer....
