Manual vs. Automatic
All,
I've been advised that I would "hate" the turbo in my 5-speed '88 535is. It's 10 miles each way to work, half highway and half city. I also what to enjoy driving schools with this car.
Who uses what and what are your experiences?

I cannot imagine you would "hate" a manual trans turbo car. I own two and definitely do not hate them. Do I sometimes wish they were auto - yes, when I'm stuck in traffic for an hour. Would I really want to trade it for an auto - no.
I know there are a few on this board who have auto trans turbo cars and they are very happy with their cars. Turbo cars with auto trans seem to work very well, its just not my cup of tea.
I would be more concerned with your slightly high leakdown numbers than the fact that your car is 5 spd.

Theres no problems with a turbo 5 speed. Especially if you make enough power to gear it to the moon. You wouldnt use more than first and second gear around town. Its not as easy to launch a manual transmission, but its not impossible. Generally speaking, I like it for the same reasons I like a stock engine with a 5 speed.

I would not hesitate to turbo my '87 535is if I didn't have two other projects going! I have both automatic and a 5 speed turbo cars.
THe 5 speed is an '81 745i. The low low stock compression means no torque, so I kinda miss my torque converter (i.e. torque multiplier). Swapped in a 3.25 diff, that helped some, but a motronic block is in it's future.
Your '87 will have different issues, but lack of stock torque is not one of them.
Make sure to install a boost gauge and air/fuel mixture meter. The boost gauge will help you monitor vaccum leaks, and will also help you modulate your boosting when you plant the right foot.

I've a slushbox in the S2, a revaned converter (3500rpm as opposed to 1800) and 3.73 LSD. If you go with an auto and have the EH tranny, take my advice and get rid of it. I went through 2 of the electronic trannys before I put a regular old (read bulleproof) 4hp22 and have had no isses since.
The latest addition being made to the autobox is a B&M 4sp. ratchet shifter. It's an experiment that (I believe) ought to work pretty well, essentially working as a sequential shifter. Hell, if it works for the hot rod crowd......

Andy, Nebraska_e28 wants to go FI sooner or later too and went through the trouble of doing a auto-manual swap, so I'm thinking he's put some thought into how it would work for him.

I mean, besides the A clutch pack burning out?
I ask because I just went to hell and back to replace the EH in my '85 745i. Thought about 5 speed swap, but I already have one of those. And when everything's in tune, the A/T 745i is a very smooth runner, and actually benefits from the A/T. Plus my wife drives it, so it has to be civilized.

Thanks guys, sounds like I'd enjoy the turbo 5-speed just fine. I would still like to hear from someone who tracks (with turns not just 1/4 mile) their 5-speed turbo. I would suppose if you kept in the upper part of the RPM while on the track that you wouldn't get "suprised" (loose back end when the turbo kicks in ) getting back on the gas at apex time.

That would be Skeen, he's the best shoe around this area, by far IMO. Man, no pressure.
Totally depends on the turbo system. The TCD kit won't surprise you at all; you don't really even need to keep it "up in the revs." These things are so torquey with a turbo it drives more like a V8 than a high strung race motor.
For the track, the 5spd is the way to go. For the street, if you like a 5spd in your NA car, the turbo won't change that.

I'm with Skeen. 5 Speed baby!! If you are drag racer then an auto would be fine but if you actually know how to drive then manual is the way to go.
And you are right. Skeen is a great shoe. At the championships I kept saying to myself "who the heck is this guy?" It was great to run with him. I found myself working to keep up.

We look forward to having you around more. The competition is heating up. I'm not going to run for the MA championship this year. I'll still race quite a few of the races with the Spec E30 but I need to continue the sorting of the Spec3 E36 car and give it a little exposure. I'll still be at Mid O in Sept though wtih the E30.
