Anyone have any first hand experience with ETA clutchs?

Discussion pertaining to positive pressure E28s.

Anyone have any first hand experience with ETA clutchs?

Post by bmw4aaron »

Turbodan would prolly know this, but I'm axin everyone here. Anyone know how much power a stock eta pressure plate (non supereta) will hold?

After doing an auto to manual swap on my TD, my clutch slips when boost comes on. Depending on how much throttle, it will start slipping at 2k through 3k before it grabs again.

If I leave my injection pump configuration to US spec, my clutch holds fine. But once I set it up euro style, I get power and slippage.

I found that a 2.5i clutch will be worthless by about 12-14 psi and probably 280 rwtq. I never used a 2.7e clutch, but the pressure plates seem noticeably stronger than the 2.5i parts. Due to the similar friction disc material, I bet it'd also be toast by about the same point. Maybe a little more.

I was doing just fine with the stock 2.5i clutch at 266 rwtq. I think a stock e or i clutch would hold reliably at that point.

Is that a new or used clutch? A td doesn't have THAT much more power than a 528e. IMHO it shouldn't slip like that if it's new.

Maybe not enough break-in time?

A td could be making some serious torque with a retimed injection pump. I've seen some videos on youtube with intercooled and retimed td's hauling some ass. Its all about the torque.

Retimed pump? All that does is change the start of injection and should not change the power output significantly unless serisouly retarded or advanced (then either way it is a negative impact).

I bet the clutch from the swap parts is just no good or needs breaking in as suggested earlier...hopefully not a new oil leak. (unless the stock clutch really is just crap).

Those cars on Youtube have more than just a couple mods done to achieve that power (fuel screws increased, intercooler, custom LDA etc). The one dyno I can read the numbers on the fellow only makes 181HP @ 4370rpm, 356Nm (263lbs/ft)@ 2790rpm (here is the later video where he is making more power but he talks about his mods : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3IfYJdA ... re=related)

I've never done a td motor, but thats what I've read. I dont know for sure what they do to the injection pump, but they definitely do something.

It is really pretty simple. The couple links below give a really nice over view for the DIY home tuner (please use an EGT gauge or keep the smoke to a grey haze at worst).

http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/jag/vw/en ... jpump.html

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm (this one is closer to what we have on our cars according to what I have read, it could well be possible to use the early ram pump on our engines but you'd have to change the govenor and fueling levels)

I hope I didn't sound snippy in my last post, not trying to come accross that way.

Brand new clutch from BMW. New rear main seal also. Dropped the inspection plate and didn't notice any oil in there. Never heard of a break in time, on a clutch. Done many-a clutches on 540's, M3's, M5's, etc. Always bolted up and beat the hell out of them, never slipped. Never had experience with 2.7 or 2.5i clutches but used an e30 M3 clutch on my 300hp S52. Never slipped that. I guess I'll have to drop the trans down and have a peak. Thanks for the heads up fellas.

This link is money. I plan to order a boost and pyro gauge in the next week or two, and then I'll stay playing. I definately need to adjust my smoke, when I have the hose hooked up, and WOT, I can't see the cars behind me anymore. (and it's not because I pulled away from them  )

We had an ETA clutch in our wreck racing turbocharged E30. It would hold most of the time but would slip as soon as you got it even a little bit hot. Since it was just a racecar though, we put in a cheap solid 3 puck disc -and increased the step on the flywheel a bit and the clutch is very solid now.
