Found a 745i in the corner of a used car lot

Post by Andrew Elmore »

Looked pretty ratty but the hood was unlatched so I checked it out and looked to be in pretty good shape. The salesmen were not around as I'm assuming they were off for chirstmas and such, but seeing the car sparked my interest in picking the car up for the m106 swap into my e28 that is parked in the barn.

I've been digging around trying to figure out what need to be taken out of the 745 to make it work in the 535.

Mileage is unknown and I really don't know much of anything about turbos except they make the car go fast and the general concept of how it works and the pieces involved.

From what I've found is that its a pretty straight forward swap just need a passengerside engine mount and I'd keep the ECU from the e28. I saw a few posts about the 745i DME but I'm not sure what that piece would be used for

Will my getrag260/6 bolt up to the block? (I'd think it will)

If anyone has a list of parts I'd need to bring over from the e23 thatd help out a lot and I also disvocered that 745i.com is no longer up, so are there any other forums specific to the 545i conversion?

It also looks like Todd is a great resource for this swap and I'll most likely be talking with him if the price is pretty low for the 745i which I will be finding out in the next few days.

Andrew, If you use the e28 ecu you'll loose the knock control from the e23 ecu/knock controller. Your 535 probably has high impedence injectors, the 745 has low impedence injectors, so you'll need to keep your original harness, ecu, injectors, afm. For knock control you can always go with the Saab APC system:http://web.inter.nl.net/users/turbo-team-europe/apc.htm

Thanks for the links, I found scottie's website earlier today and was checking a few things out.

Seems fairly straight forward but I've never undertook an engine transplant before.

I'm assuing with a turbo, I'd want to go to a larger injector and maybe a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. I'd think Todd would have most of my answers but step one would be to figure out how much that car is going to cost and see if it would be worth it to untake that project.

I wouldn't really be able to get going on the project until the summer and I'd have to see where I can store all the goodies etc until I get done with my springer semester

Thanks for the information though and I'll keep digging around...anyone else have a list of things to look for or what I might run into with the 745 like the turbo needing a rebuild etc?

TIA

Unless the car is under $1000 or so, between all the work extracting parts, and sourcing the additional needed parts to do the swap, disposing of the hulk, you will likely be better off just going with a kit from Todd that can be installed in a weekend and comes in one big happy box.

Thanks Chris, thats kind of what I was thinking, this entire project pretty much depends on how expensive the car is going to cost.

Id its under a grand, I'd be pretty tempted to buy it and just see what I can do with it. I dont mind bending the wrenches at all and would look forward to jumping into a project like that.

I'm thinking that between parting out the 745 with a cheap initial cost, I dont think it would turn out too bad at all.

IIRC, to fit the 745i components, you will have to relocate the brake lines on the passenger side inner fender and might have to modify (i.e. beat or cut) the inner fender as well.

So maybe I would be better off just taking the turbo parts off of the 745 and putting them on the e28? I think I'd want to rebuild the engine if I were to go that route to make sure everything is up to snuff to take some big boost :alright:

I should be able to check the car out today if my sister is up for checking out her 323i that she wants to buy.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the information so far!
