thinking about turboing the 535

Post by VW+bimmer=bliss »

high all im kinda new here and i got the idea of turbocharging the bimmer, just a few q's though:
my motor (which i do not know the current state of) has 234,000 miles on the death clock and was wodering if i should take a look at the bottom end bearings and piston rings?

should i leave the a/c in the car for better fitment of a custom or purchased kit?

would i need to upgrade my injectors for higher flow?

can i adapt a SAAB apc boost control system to the engine while running stock motron?

and can i put a chip in the ECU with a turbo kit or one cant live with the other?

any answers would be appreciated (and my car was purchased for 200$ so ruining the motor is not an issue as i have a junker m88 motor and ecu sitting in the rafters :D )

Few short answers in the order asked:

1. I'd pull the bearing caps and have a look-see, the rings should be ok for now...

2. a properly designed kit, such as the TCD offerings, allow you to retain the AC components in their stock locations with only the changing of the pressure lines to rerouted units.

3. Yes, the injectors will need to be upgraded to higher flow units for any real power...

4. yes, the SAAB APC unit can be used in conjunction with the stock Motronic management

5. You don't want to use an aftermarket chip designed for a NA engine, as it will detonate badly due to the extra timing advance most of them use. A complete kit such as the TCD offerings include a turbo-specific chip that will retard the timing a bit on the top end to give the proper timing curve for safety.

I built my turbo engine out of junkyard pieces, and have had no problems. Then again, if it has problems NA, it will still have the same problems when turbo'd, but they will likely be amplified! If it runs properly now, it will likely run properly boosted as well...

naw this junkyard specializes in odd ball cars and parts, its rite down the street from the shop i work at during the summer and i literally got the front half of this m5, i just dragged it down the street, sparks everywhere (its only a block)
with the old beater plow truck and some shipping rope of course
