Car has 16" US M5 wheels on it now.
Style 5's are out. BTDT
Possible M-tech wheels with throwing star covers?
Style 32's maybe?
Don't want Alpina's or Hartge's.

If I could find a set of vintage BBS RZ like I had on my '87 535is (see pic) that would be perfect. But in silver.

They are almost identical to the US M5 wheels, but they are a diff. offset allowing a deeper lip.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure how good the Throwing Stars would look on that car with the color. It's worth a try, though.

You didn't mention Style 42s, but then we don't want to steal FastPat's thunder. :)

Have you thought about a non-BMW wheel like, say, a Mille Miglia MM-1^2 (that's MM-1 squared)? Like DPP's car: It's a simple, 5-spoke design that I really like. They have these available in 17x8, 17x9, 18x8, and 18x9, and all are available in either the painted silver that Brian has or shadow chrome finish that JBort has on his M-Tech-converted 535iS. So you have plenty of options.

Style 42 is also a BTDT. (see pat's post and my reply from the other day)

I would prefer OE, non-OE BBS or a tuners wheels. Would rather stay away from most aftermarket wheels.

Ackhully, the OEM US M5 wheels were Style 5's, just not the Type II Composite Style 5's. There's a Style 37 M-Parallel in 18x8 that's hubcentric on an e28, the '95 e34 540i Sport came with them. Pretty rare though, you'd probably have to buy new ones. There's a 235 and a 225 tire in an 18 inch diameter that will fit an e28 too. :p

The Tire Rack still has the e28 in their picture database, so you can call up a picture and try different wheels on it to see how they look (and you can change the color of the car to suit, although they don't have silver for some reason.) They do have a fair selection of BBS wheels.

Pat, I thought the E38 came with the 18" M-Parallel, too. They were available in 18x8 and 18x9.5 versions, both polished and painted, IIRC.

I don't want to go any larger than 17".
Not real excited about any of the new BBS stuff. Prefer period area wheels.
As for the Style 5's, I was mainly talking about the E39 17" version.

They did, Brad, but the offset on the e38 wheels isn't right, something like 13mm for the front 18x8's, so they'd not really work well on an e28. the wheels for the e34 were 20mm offset, just right. Strange that BMW made that many offsets for various models,:? but that's what they did. %)

Find some gold ones like you pictured and have them refinished in silver. :)

I really like the ones that TCD sold a couple of weeks ago:

16x7.5 in front, 16x8.5 rear. Period correct, light, mmmmmm...

Ahh, of course. You're right! That's similar to the weird offset differences on the Style 5 wheels. I compiled a database of all two-piece Style 5s, and I found some interesting information on width and offset. Too bad we'll never see half of the versions of that wheel.

If I could find a set I would, but they are very rare. Other than the set I had, I have only seen 1 other set. I think it was someone on the east coast that had them forsale about 2 years ago or so.

But they are 8.5" not 7.5". With an et13 I think I would have a problem.

Hmmm. an extra inch and 7mm too little offset, yep they'd hit the fenders. Too bad. I can tell you how to get wheels from Germany even if the seller won't ship ot of Germany. Just a little extra money to a trans-shipper I've used numerous times, not fly-by-night, but in the business and bonded. :p

What about something a little more unique than just OEM BMW wheels (not that there is anything wrong with those.) However, this is obviously a special car and deserves some special wheels. I might suggest a set of vintage Hardy & Beck 3 pieces if you could find a set or something like those? I dunno, i'll try to think of some other ideas...

Cheers,
Jonas

Is there a reason you haven't mentioned the original RS?

TT,

Why not real ALPINA wheels?? Other than rarity and cost, I only know of one other M5 besides my own with ALPINA wheels and he has 17" wheels with the covers.

IIRC, Enchanter said they wouldn't fit, but he was incorrect, I have them on my M5. To make them fit over the stock 4-pot calipers requires a 3mm spacer with the stock M5 rotors or E32 750i rotors. I found out that ALPINA had two different styles of front disks for the E28. One PN where 300/30 with 10mm thick hats and the other PN was 300/30 with 7mm thick hats, otherwise they're excatly like M5 rotors. Someone I was exchanging emails with that had an E28 B7 turbo, possibly Frank Haas, was using E28 M5 rotors with custom 3mm thick spacers because KSK wanted nearly $500 for a set of front rotors for his B7. So the M5 rotors with 3mm spacers were a deal at $100 per rotor with the only difference being the hat thickness and the ALPINA rotors are grooved. After I received this info I had custom spacers made, mounted my ALPINA wheels, and sold the chromed Hartge wheels.

TT,

Here's a thought if you really want to be period correct. Hit the E24 boards and find a set of OEM 390 mm TRX bottlecaps, this was the stock wheel on the Euro M5 with 220/50x390 TRX tires. ~0 ~0 ~0

How about these with some custom fender flares? A bit pricey, though.

How much are you looking to spend? If you've got $2k to burn on wheels, might I suggest having CCW make you a set? They have a nice forged mesh wheel that you can custom order to your specs.

Raj, that first link is true Euro trash! Those are awesome! Holy crap, 16x9.5! Imagine how they'd look in the front. I bet you couldn't even steer with those things. :)

The second link, pretty cool, but if they really were mag, wouldn't they be um, flammable? ~0

I'm sure they are a magnesium alloy, not pure magnesium. Those ACT wheels would look badass, but I'm not so sure how good the tire selection would me. Not to mention they wouldn't fit w/o some serious fender work.

Hey Tony, if you are looking for nice, unique, period correct wheels, I personally think that a set of Hardy&Beck 3-pc 16's would look absolutely bitching on your car. Not sure where you'd find them, though.
