Just scored 2002 525i Brakes!

Okay I just got two free E39 525i brakes. However, there is about a milimeter of dip from the rim to the actual surface. I dunno if the shop just didnt want to resurface the finish or the thickness got to that "too small" threshold. I wanna take them somewhere and get them refinished and say its for one time used race application if they are too thin. The look good! Its cloudy so pics will be back. I prefer sunlight pics over camera flash. Are these the same size as the 535i big brake kit? If so wil E23 calipers do the job?

OK, you need to research big brakes before you even consider doing anything. E39 rotors are not hubcentric to E28s. E23 brakes don't fit at all (I am guessing you transposed the 2 and 3.) Go here and read before you post even one more thing in this thread:

Well, i searched and there nothing about new style brake so i figured id ask. i KNOW about the big break thread and to use 535i parts solely.
NO info on E39 ONCE SO EVER, so go head ppl, name ahead if it makes you feel bigger. I dont feel any smaller. Quite frankly, its a message board, not bulletin board. Maybe you guys should convert sheesh.

Nothing about an E39 rotor will work on your car, and resurfacing BMW rotors is fucking stupid. They only cost like $40 each brand new. And two worn rotors are not "brakes".
Also, 535i parts are not what you would use for a big brake upgrade. Do some research, like in the FAQ. Also check out the brake upgrade info under "Brakes".

You'll also find no information
whatsoever on Jaguar X-Type or Audi A6 or Ford Mustang brakes. Why do you think that is? Does someone actually have to say, "
Stay away from those Humber Snipe drum brakes!" for you to understand that they won't work?

If you had gotten calipers, that would be one thing. Perhaps you could set the rotors on some paper to keep them from flying away.
To try to make those parts (consumables) work on your car will take a lot more effort than it is worth. Honestly, until you get the rest of the car up to snuff, I wouldn't worry about upgrading the brakes. With the right pads, they'll be more than adequate for most driving activity.

Your "internet reputation" as you call it is going to make people think IDGAF when you post a question asking for help. If that is what you want, so be it, but you are probably going to want a little assistance when doing that timing belt job, because if you make a mistake you will likely bend valves. You should read more and post a little less for a while. You will learn more that way and probably piss off fewer people (who will eventually help you out if you listen to them.)

Well that's your problem right there. This isn't "just the Internet." As corny as you think this might sound, and as corny as it may be,
Mye28.com is subtitled "The BMW E28 5-Series Automobile Enthusiast's Community." And its subtitled that for a reason. Many (if not most) forum posters have met at least some of the hundreds of people who post here on a fairly regular basis. And for the most part, e28 BMWs are the only reason these people have met, but it is not the only reason that many people here have become and stayed friends. And part of that is a willingness to actually help people (in
the real world). I'm not driving to Toronto next weekend (with my dad no less) to just experience the
internet. I'm going to hangout with some of the greatest people on the planet (

And as part of this deal many of us give back and are willing to go out of our way to help others here on the board. And we will (and do) suffer fools, when those dumbasses are good-natured, up-front, honest, and willing to take their lumps (like just about any other newb in a tight-knit group).

Your dad's Mustang did
NOT have mechanical drum brakes! It may have had
unassisted hydraulic drum brakes, but they were most assuredly not mechanical.
Still, for the last appearance of mechanical brakes on a mass produced American car, you
would look to Ford, which had them through the late 1930s.
The other thing I thought I'd mention in this thread is that you guys really ought to stop beating up on the now-suspended OP. It's hardly fair when he can neither answer nor apologize (assuming he would).
