Painting chrome bumpers?

Post by Melspace02 »

I was going to black out the chrome on my bumpers like I have on my e30 on my e28. When I bought my e30 they were already painted black so I was wondering if anyone had experience on doing this. This is what I had in mind...

sand bumpers "metal chrome part" 60-80 grit
use etching primer then paint with black bumper paint?

I think when tucking the us bumpers , painting them black looks good. Here is my e30 with tucked black bumpers

60-80 grit will gouge the bumpers. They are anodized aluminum. Try something much less aggressive and then use a self etching primer.

That is gonna be my plan when it comes time for the bumper tuck on the e28. Low grit sanding, some primer and then a little black paint, maybe a satin or low gloss to match the plastic.

Ive used the black bumper paint from autozone a couple times to touch up the bumper on the e30 and the finsh matches great. Also , just to let you know I ordered the 215/55 tires you recommended. Posting photos soon

I plan on doing this before the end of march as well. Bumper tuck/ paint. I thinks it's going to look great.

I just finished this on my car. Bumper tuck front, and paint on both bumpers. I did the front in semi-gloss, and regret it. I did the rear and tails in matte, and I greatly prefer the matte over gloss/semi gloss.
Overall very pleased with the outcome, makes the tuck look much better, and is a great improvement over the aging anodized aluminum.
