Got broad sided today...

Post by 1st 5er »

Is this something I caught on the board here. I'm thinking it's contagious.

I, literally, got knocked out of driving my E12 to 5erFest this year.
Thank God no injuries physically, my emotions took a pretty good hit though.
The worst part, it was my stinking fault. The sheriff was generous and wrote me a warning instead of a ticket.
The best part, see the rust, that'll be gone when I get the body work done.

In settling with my insurance carrier, got an appointment with the adjuster on Friday,
what separate $ amount should I expect to compensated for either replacement of
or the refinishing of the wheel, pic #3?

What are they valuing your car at? I'm afraid they'd total my E12.

Glad you are alright, you can get everything fixed up!

Won't know any details until Friday.

What about the wheel?

Is the wheel bent, or just scraped? If it's just a cosmetic repair I'd say $100-$150 to fix.

edit: The car is still driveable, isn't it? No reason you can't still attend 5erFest, no one's going to kick you out for having a dented car.

It's got a pretty good gash, haven't had it off yet to see if bent.

Can you jack that corner up and use some sort of a feeler to check for lateral run out to see if it is bent?
I would think the biggest problem will be getting the correct shade of silver if it is refinished. You could try to get the adjuster to buy off on refinishing all four so that they match.
After the adjuster looks at it you might want to try a mild compound on it to try to get the transferred paint off of it.

Oh yeah, full coverage, comp., collision, liability, uninsured motorist.
Since I'm at fault, it's a claim against my collision.

I only had liability through my regular insurance. My insurance company told me no matter how much I had invested, my car was only worth a few hundred dollars to them. They told me ANY claim would result in my car being totaled.

It's still hard to prove much about these cars until (and if it even happens) they start going up in value and trade hands enough to prove that.

Try a collector's policy from a company like Haggerty's. Inexpensive if you don't drive the car much and you can get an agreed value to the car. If it's a daily driver, probably wouldn't work.

I've got no problems either way.
I'll be compensated for the damage, buy some rubbing compound, and get out the buffer, and get 'er done! :D

I suspect I'll receive, after the deductible, close to what I actually paid for the car, maybe even more, and then...

...from the parts car I picked up, a little cutting, a little welding, a little help from my friend with the prepping and painting, and even the rust will be gone.

+1, just make sure to tell them if you have changed anything on the car... like wheels. Made a difference in my rate

My ultimate goal was to get everything sorted, including the bodywork needed prior to this incident,
and then retire it to Haggerty status, and then start on another one in my herd.
So this incident is really a positive thing as mentioned in the OP.
I just wasn't expecting someone else to pull the trigger for me on when the body work would be done and then help pay for it.

It's all good, really. :D

They are telling you in no uncertain terms that you need to get collector insurance on your e12.

Yep!

I have a hard time justifying comprehensive on a car this old at my age. Collectors is a no-brainer.

Kept my appointment with the adjuster, but didn't walk away with a check.

Their estimate couldn't be completed as the E12 is not in their database,
and this is Allstate I'm dealing with, so no specific parts and/or labor cost are readily available.
She tried, but a rear quarter panel couldn't be sourced locally.
I even had her call Bavarian Auto Recycling, they said not available through them.

I'm going to have to get independent estimates and go from there.

Spoke with a couple of shops yesterday, and got some hard repair quotes.
Replacing the quarter, estimates ran from $1,900 to $2,500.
I called the adjuster, who had with leaving out the quarter panel price, estimated almost $1,500 to repair,
said they valued the car at NADA's Average Retail Value of $3,375, I was certainly surprised by that information,
then said if the shop of my choice could do the work and stay within the $2,500 range it wouldn't be a problem.
They could do that and not total out the car.
Yippee!!!

Yeah John, the SoCal guys way would be nice, but my insurance company won't come off their estimate until quoted differently from the repair shop.

We'll see how things play out...
I'll post the final outcome.

Keep the cards and letters coming. NO! On second thought, "Don't clap, throw money".

I've not been in any real big hurry since the car is still drivable and I use it as my DD.

However, I took the car to the shop last week and left it so the insurance company adjuster could discuss with the shop owner the additional charges.
After the adjuster looked at the car and the repair bill he started crawfishing as to car's value vs. repair bill.
Said he recommended turning it over to the total loss department.
They in turn told me the car had a retail value of $1,885.00.
I told them, "no way, since I'd previously been told, by one of their own people, thank God for recorded conversations, that the car's value was $3,375.00".

I had to get an independent appraiser's assessment, used the one recommended and paid for by the insurance company, so we could come to some agreement as the retail value and thus they could make a determination as to how to handle the claim.

Got some good news Friday as to the appraiser's bottom line.
He came up with a valuation of $3,250.00.

Hopefully this next week the insurance company will receive this info and make a final proposal in my favor.

I plan on taking the cash, stripping the car, doing the repairs my self,
with some coaching and help from a really good friend,
putting in the five speed while it's apart,
getting the whole car resprayed, and then driving it like I stole it.

My fingers are crossed...

Got a call from the insurance company today.
Here are the details:

Appraised value by independent appraiser - $3,250.00
Salvage value - $500.00
My deductible - $500.00

They are in fact totaling the car and allowing me to buy it back for the salvage value, and it won't have a salvage title.

According to the adjuster they'll be putting me a check in the mail tomorrow for $2,250.00.

Man, am I a happy camper!!! Or at least will be when I get the check.

Now I know it's true, "I'm in good hands".
