Well i bought a RHD BAE Turbo manifold of TCD a while back.

I bought it with the intention of sometime down the track using it with a 535i or similar with the low Compression US engiine

Well that time is sought of approacing....and i know the basics of Turbos, Im not afraid to bolt it on etc...but the finer points like Maps and types of blowers, blow valves etc..im not so savvy on

Here is the Kit:
Image

Basically my firstt idea was to in the future buy a 535i witht he Low compression 3.5. but as i am in no hurry to do that...i figured why not put it on my car Euro 528i) while i take off the extracors and have them coated for my new 2.8 engine im have been building before i bought the kit ...just to see how it goes on a 250,000klm 2.8 engine with the eequipment supplied in the Kit (everything is there to bolt it straight up to a L-jet engine with instructions.) It is probably a good idea for me to play around with the turbo on a older engine using the original intended application..just to see how it all goes..beofre i get more serious down the track.

But firtly i have to buy a Turbo charger...TCD (todd) said that the best option is a Garret T3 but the holes are drilled for a T4 i beleive? and would have to be redone..not a big deal.

OR should i just go the T4...(from my under standing the T3 T4 the numbers on the ends just stand for capacity of the engine it should be matched to?? or am i way off??

also im not sure about the instructions that came with it......it mentions nothing about Boost Retard? It does have an Enrichment circuit in the kit. (i might scan these and get you guys to help me work out the instructions while i put it together.)

The kit was made for a 530 and a 730i and everything is identical except i have the later style intake manifold. Capacity is similar, it is L-jet..sam basic setup all round.

It is just the finer points that i need advice on,

Cheers,
Aaron.

Do you own the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell yet? Some of the information in there is a little dated, but the basics remain the same. Since your turbo kit is little dated too ;) it'd probably have all the concept information you need.

Im a little vague pobably in my questions.

I think i have my head around the Turbo i need,,,It is a shame im not there for advice on a more personal level ..ill probably have to find someone who can help me get started here.

Todd was very helpful in the sale..he told me what i needed..just didnt make a whole lot of sense being a Noob to Turbos...just need some machining to fit the t3 and extrernal wastegate..just hard to picture with out having a turbo and waste gate in your hand..so im sought of trying to imagine it.

Ive been reading the manual...and it shoud OK..just hard to make sense as mine is the same setup..just looks ahell of alot diffrent in the Pics

I have Corky bells Supercharged....and it is a good book...will try to source a copy of the other.

One more thing...on the maniffold it appears the ports are just alittle bit smaller than the ports on the Head...shout i try to correcty this..i heard something some where about it being a touch smalle r for some reason.??

A T3 with integral wastegate is the easier choice with this manifold. If you choose to go to a T4 you'll need to add a flange for a wastegate.

There's never any reason for that (on the exhaust, that is). Time for a bit of port-matching and blending!

This is the BAE system we built for Alan Goodman. This is a T4 turbo and had an external WG mounted on the underside of the manifold. This mounting might not work with the RHD but it gives you an idea of where things will be situated.
More pictures of Alan's car at the TCD website and I'll post some pictures of the exhaust I made once I get home.
Also, I removed a ton of material from the ports on the manifold when gasket matching.

Fantastic...I have the first 2 photos...the third i havent seen...which is handy. THere should be enough room under neath for the Waste gate looking at that.

I went out and bought a T3 Gasket today to see what exactly has to be done:

I am a little worried as some of the holes go very close to the other holes...is this a concern? shold i try to fill the old holes first plug and weld or somthing...r just go and drill the new holes? the other question..is it a good idea to remove all the excess steel around the gasket or just leave it as it may help to act as a heat sink? it looks like you have just left it there sweeny?

And there is a heap of stuff to come out of the exhaust port. like you said.. and you can see:

Im off to buy a Air powered DIe grinder and some engineering ink. (i have the carbide bit...but dont feel like wearing out a good drill.
