I did this a few weeks back...this is a Backyard Spray job by me on my brothers E28.
The car cost $200 the paint about $300 A new tranny from a 733i i bought which cost me $300 (had to swap bell housings) And that was it...practically Road worthy....will get some photos of it all back to gether.
This was my first attwmpt at a proper respray and it came out OK...next one will be bettter!

The Colour is Silver/Grey mettalic. It was sitting in the paint shop on special as some one had it mixed..but didnt like it..$99 for 4 litres...orignally my brother wanted a gun metal grey colour...but we convinced him it would not be any good as the door jams would have to be sprayed.
But i saw the paint..and it was cheap..so we went and grabbed it..and didnt do the door jams...as you can see...bit it dosnt matter as no one will see..we did mask up a neat line though....an am thinking of just doing the silver part with a black spray can...and it should neaten it up.

nice work, and a nice colour too
how many coats of primer/paint/lacquer did you use? and how far into the old paint did you go with the sanding?
im trying to get as many peoples different methods as possible since im going to be spraying mine satin black, it should be very easy but want to get an idea
thanks

Well basically we spapped over the Domestic dispute doors that where kicked in by the previous owner as he had a dispute with his girlfriend.
Then fixed the dents on the bonnet qurter panel, sill, and rear quarter above the wheel..which you can still see in the right light..very hard to get them out!
Then rubbed back the car with 600grit wet and dry....but we did it dry...it is better if you want to spray straight away as you dont have to wait for th water to dry.
Undercoated it....but didnt mist it with black..which we should have. (it helps to show up the dents on the second sand)
So we sanded the under coat with the 600 again.
Then base coat...2 coats..but we had some orange peel and over spray. aproblem with acrylic is that it can dry in the air and land on the flat surfaces..so we went a third coat from memory.
Then Mixed a bout 25/75 of colour and clear coat....this helps bring out the luste and Mettalic effect more...do this..alway do you first coat of clear with some base in it.
THen 4 litres of clear...with some sanding inbetweed with 800 if i remeber correctly.
THen compounded it...but we actully rubbed the whole car back with 2000grit first then Compounded...(water based cutting compound..then a lighter one from farecla...then Silcone free polish and Wax.
If you have clear coat problems with your BMW though ATM....get a orbital sander and take those areas reight back to original primer...other wise it will come off again. so yuse 100grit (the shite sheets i cant think of the name of the paper..) and then rub back with 600 or 400 if you find it difficult to get the scratches out from the 100.
Good luck with you project.
