Big boost half shafts/axel help

Post by LinneBro »

I am swapping an turbo s52b30 into my 533i and I'm going to be making north of 700whp. I know my half shafts will break. I was wondering what you guys did about yours. I hear people cryogenically treating theirs and then I was looking a chromolly half shafts from driveshaftshop.com. I also head the euro 524td ran stonger half shafts. What do you guys recommend?

Cryogenic treating probably isn't going to do much for you. You're better off buying custom ones.

That's an ambitious power goal for an e28 chassis.

My friend was making over 700 in his e30. I am going to be doing some reinforcing before I do anything crazy in her.

Do you guys know if the half shafts on the euro 524td are thicker or more re-enforced that my 533i? or maybe any axels that will be a direct fit?

For that much power i would go with entire E32 750i subframe with the 210 diff.
you might need flares (depends on wheel offset) because of the wider wheel base.

Many high power e30 guys use the z3m half shafts, very expensive and hard to come by. The driveshaft shop may be able to make some custom axles for you.

You should probably make 700rwhp and then have enough traction to break the stock axles/diff before upgrading. I have managed 1.6x 60ft times in my e28 which puts more tq to the ground than anyone else to my knowledge in the USA and have never broken anything. It's the application of the power that breaks or doesn't break parts. You can shatter a diff with 200rwhp if you wheel hop the drivetrain to death. You won't break anything doing 3rd gear hwy burnouts with your 700rwhp.

Yes, 188mm diff too. 1.58 60ft in 188mm diff in an e34.
