FMIC without any cutting!

Post by Jays535is »

So I had this FMIC from a Gen 3 Rx7 that came with my car exactly like this.

I was originally going to use an air/water unit, but after starring at it long enough I figured I could get this intercooler in there with minimal modification.

I removed the a/c fan, and bottom fan mount. Then I manipulated the brackets so the condensor was closer to the radiator (about a 1/2 inch). Then slide the intercooler in from the bottom, it's very snug in there without any actual mounting. The inlet & outlet are facing the firewall. I will be using my a/c so I will install 2 smaller fans above the intercooler.

You're going to need more cooler than that. Thats smaller than my primary air/air, which produced 150 degree charge temps at the top of second gear. That'll kill your power in second gear on up.

I agree with you about the size. Although your probably running more boost then I'm going to (about 8 psi). I just figure it's alot better than no intercooler, and alot easier and cheaper than an a/w unit.

You'll be turning it up sooner or later, I assure you. Its a nice bonus down the road, when you've got the tune down at like 12 psi, and all you have to do is get a larger intercooler for a massive gain in performance.

Are you going to use any data acquisition system to watch your IAT's?

Eventually. Later down the road I might use a water/methanol injection system also. I also will be fabbing up some shrouding to force all air coming threw the openings to go threw the intercooler.

That's absolutely the least efficient way to have the air enter the tanks. Tanks are a nice design but entry into the tanks is as bad as it gets.

The core size is sufficient for 8psi.

Definitely not ideal, but it came with the car. I do have an eBay a/w unit that I could use. Or I could get the in/outlets re-welded for a smoother transition.
