m20 turbo

Post by bavblue »

I am thinking about squeezing more power out of mine M20 super eta. To go i-head is one option and turbo is another. I am not very familiar with turbo engines, but I can figure out. What about financial part of project? I saw some turbo kits on eBay for 700 ish. Are those good and reliable kits? One from TCD is 3700 w/o intercooler. Please share your experience. What numbers are realistic for turbocharged m20, horse power and torque? Also Ireland engineering sells thick head gaskets for turbo charged engines, how important to use that gasket. What about long duration camshaft and ecu. Do I have to use long duration cam or stock i-cam fine too. Thank you

The way to go is to install the 2.5 camshaft and springs, intake manifold and throttle and ecu and then turbocharge it. I know a guy running a that motor with a GT2871R at about 18 psi, and it moves pretty well.

You can use the stock HG and head bolts reliably up to about 1 bar of boost if you tune it right. The TCD kit is a good deal. I spent a lot of money and a shit ton of work and time doing my homemade system. Its hard to do it cheaper than that for the same quality kit.

I am leary of aftermarket head gaskets for the M20. I dont believe I've found the limits of the stock one yet. I'll see how it holds up with some burly ass studs providing some solid clamping force.

Theres no reason you couldn't plumb an S1 into your own little air to air cooler either. If I were to do it all over again, thats what I would do.

The ebay cheap turbo kits are Made in China ripoff pieces of shit. Do not buy one. Pay a little more for the right stuff, support some honest legitimate businesses and get the best results. Cheap turbo crap kits are for ricers.

That'd be the TCD S1 kit you were referring to. Good components should be a high priority. The TCD manifold is a good design with an external wastegate. Thats a very good place to start.
