$28k for an e28?? And reserve is not yet met!!!
He sure is sure he has a good E28, isn't he. "Best one in the world"
I think this was the one that Duke accused the seller and his friends of shill bidding. It did seem a little shady, if you ask me.
I think I remember Rob Levinson's old Dinan Turbo M5 selling for around $20k on eBay a year or two back. Actually, it sold for about that price TWICE. Once from Rob and then once again from the next owner.

Yep, its COOP again. This guy is a crook. A couple of days after we had the big blow-up on the old forum I received emails from two different people who personally know COOP in the Bay area thru the 2002 clubs. They confirmed that COOP had two shill bidders for that first auction and that this is normal conduct for COOP. He has burned many people in the 2002 community and is generally hated by most of them. He also has very dishonest business practices with his used car lot. I have not started any crap with him again because he has stayed away from this new forum. I can guarantee that this current auction is tainted too. I would steer way clear of that car.
I contacted the high bidder of the first auction with the information given me about the shill bidding. I bet that is why the sell fell through.
Bottom Line - we don't need a guy like COOP in our community.

This thread prompted me to think that it is doubtful anyone here would pay $20k plus on the frontend any e28 thesedays. Instead, we'd be more likely to buy one reasonably priced (say not more than $15k for a nice ///M5, $8-10k for a nicd M535i, upwards of $6-7k for a nice 535is, $5k for a 535i) and then gradually modify the hell out of it (witness very nice Duke's M535i/Turbo and Daryl's "skunkworks" 535i). That way, we protect ourselves from the ire of our significant others by gradually modifying the car...no more than $500-1000 at a time
Cheers,

ps.
Can't believe COOP hasn't been repremanded by eBay yet for his alleged shady business practices on their site...

For a standard E28, yes. But, for some of the tuner cars, there are people out there willing to pay 5 figures for one. Witness the two cases I mentioned. I've seen Euro M5s go for close to $20k on eBay, too. I bet an extremely nice, very low mileage (say, below 60k) US M5 would fetch a relatively high sum of money, too.
But, I agree with you on buying a cheap one and dumping money into it. I agree simply because I enjoy the project more than the outcome. I wouldn't want to buy someone else's modified car (i.e. Dinan M5). I would want to buy a near-stock E28 and perform MY projects on it.
