I have just aquired an 88 M5. I have heard that fitting 17's can be difficult esp. in the rear. Is this true? Also do you need 17's if you put e34 540 brakes on the car? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Welcome to the group! Here's a couple things you need to read: First, check out Shawn D's e28 wheel database page at http://www.cowtownzclub.org/tech/e28whe ... 03-02.html to see about what wheels and tires you can use, then check out the brake upgrade section of the e28 FAQs on the http://www.m535i.org website. Lots of good information at both locations.

Where do you race with your spec racer? I do a little fooling around with them myself, my cousin and his sons own Hallet Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma. I try to get down there once or twice a year. I know they get a few guys coming up from Texas.

The Stephens family are a lot of fun! I have raced there twice, but they probably don't remember me. They might though I was in a fair size wreck the last time I was there! My wife and I had twin girls a little more than a year ago so I have gotten to do very little racing. I actually own two Spec Racers, one of which we modified and ran in the 25 Hour Race at Thunderhill in Dec. of 04. We ran my stock one in 03. check out http://www.houstontc.net/robert/ for some neat pictures. I am in the red helmet!
The car I bought has a new stroker motor, so I wanted to be thinking about the brakes. I would generally like to keep the stock wheel size. Thanks for the help!

Yup, that's what they say about us! :p My cousin Mike is a lot crazier than I am, though.

I looked at your photos, that car looks awful familiar...I just may have raced against you at some point. I should probably say I may have been in the same race, I'm usually one of the backmarkers. Racing only once a year or so, I don't do it enough to get very good at it. I still have a lot of fun.

I'll answer the question.

The 540 rears will fit under 15" wheels (and some 14s too). The rear wheel fitmet issue has to do with width and offset. The M5 has factory rolled fenders. As you start getting to 245 or wider, the offset has to be right to get the tire to fit and the fender has to be cut.

Thank for the help guys!
Stuart - Mike is nuts but in a way I respect. I had really scattered a car (two really) in the back part of the track and Mike was trying to rent me a replacement so I could make the race, and make the race group bigger for the folks in the stands. I had my bell rung in the wreck, but I didn't really want to say that in front of my pregnant wife. So I told Mike I couldn't afford to write off two car in the same day his answer was "That's OK just wreck in front of the grandstand and I won't charge you a thing." I passed but I still think it was a great answer.

That sounds like Mike, all right. :D He's a real promotor / showman / salesman, he could sell refrigerators to Eskimos.
