All,

After seeing the recent TCD video, and lurking on some E30 boards, I've been seriously considering going FI on my euro 520i (M20). I have an earlier eta engine in storage, and fresh i heads can be had for relatively cheap. I understand this combination makes a low compression M20 that is ripe for turbocharging.

Keep in mind the car is a Euro lightweight, and all these mods would be bolt-in on my car. Interestingly, I haven't found anything but rumors on the internet concerning FI on the E28/M20, and lots of people with "buddies" that have done it. There are so many etas out there just waiting...

I want to hear your opinions! The goal is to maximize the fun per dollar. I'm a highly technical person with passable fabrication skills, though after seeing the handiwork of others on the E30 boards, i've already decided on getting a commercially available exhaust manifold. That's not to say that those E30 guys with 350whp didn't inspire me to pursue this. Think the *cough* budget turbo would be a worthwhile project? Or should I just give in and convert to M30?

TIA for your input,

Joe

Joe,

Go for it! The m20 is a capable motor. You should aim for low compression (~8:1) and use a MLS HG and studs. You need to run at least 10psi to make it worth with a m20 and plan on 15psi.
