High Temp Paint on Cat and Pipes?

Post by mercury26 »

Would it be bad to paint the catalytic converter and pipes with high temp paint? Just trying to get gather opinions on this.

Thanks,

I don't know that it would do much good. The paint will probably stick for a while to the pipes, but it will most likely burn off the catalytic converter pretty fast.

I wouldn't bother. It'll just smell funny when it gets hot, and even high temp paints probably wont last on the catalytic converter.

Don't bother...it wouldn't last 5 minutes in combat.

The high temp paint doesn't stick for long in the front of the exhaust system (cat and pipes). Smells funny the first couple times you use the car and then only holds up for a couple months before is starts cracking and then flaking. I've had much better luck with everything from the cat back. The center resonator holds up well with the paint and the rear muffler definitely can take it. Even with the "withstands temperatures of up to 1200" blah blah it doesn't. Maybe the paint can physically take the heat but the adhesion just isn't up to the job.

High temp paint on the rest of the exhaut will probably hold up but I doubt it will on the body of the cat.

I don't have a cat, but it appears to be holding up well on the headers, which get really hot, really fast.

I don't think powder coating will survive that kind of temp. For similar money ceramic coating makes more sense.

Factory cats have insulation between the cat shell and an outer shell. Hi temp paint might or might not stick, but it won't be due to heat.

I've had a silver (hi temp paint) muffler for over 100K now.
